APT Computer Access Manager
(Version 1.06)
Controled Access to Networked Computers
If you are a library, Internet cafe, or any other business that makes your computers available to the general public, this package is for you. APT Computer Access Manager consists of two programs. APT Master runs on a single computer and generates passwords to allow access to other "client" computers on a network. APT Client runs on each of the client computers you want to manage. When started, the client program presents a full screen logon dialog that prevents access to the computer until a password generated by the Master is entered. When the password is accepted, access to the computer is allowed for a specified time period. At the end of this period, the logon dialog reappears prohibiting access until another password is generated by the Master computer.

Purchase LicensesDoes the APT Master program need to be installed on a network server?
No. The APT Master program can be installed on any computer on the network that has the clients to be managed. However, you probably want the Master to be on a computer in a restricted access area since it includes functions for terminating the APT Client program or cancelling user sessions on your clients.
What do I need to do to have the system recognize a new client computer if I add one later?
As long as you have enough licenses to include the new computer, you don't need to do anything. When you start APT Client and provide the name of the Master computer, the Master will automatically recognize it and begin managing the new client.
When I first start APT Client, I must specify the network name of the Master. Where can I find it?
This depends somewhat on the operatings system you are running. However, usually it can be found in the Control Panel under Network. Additionally, both APT Master (in the main window) and APT Client (in the Logon dialog) show their network name after they are started.
Do I have to specify who is using a client session?
No. When generating a password for a user session, selecting the person who will be using the session is entirely optional. However, there are many advantages to taking the time to specify the person using the session. First of all, the user's name appears in the Master's main window indicating who is using the client. Also, user information is kept in the session logs when it is specified. Finally, session information is kept with each user record in the database so you can determine your most active users.
My keyboards all have Windows keys that bring up the Start menu even if the APT Client logon dialog is showing. How do I keep that from happening?
There are several key combinations that can bypass the logon dialog if not disabled. The Windows keys, Alt+Esc, and Ctrl+Esc are all good examples. The APT Client program has an option to disable these keys on the Maintenance menu. This option is turned off by default so as not to interfere with any keyboard managment programs you might already be running. You have the option of disabling the keys all of the time or only when there is no user session. Also see Security Considerations in the User's Guide for more information.
What if I need to run more than 5 clients?
Additional licenses are available by calling or mailing us directly. You can purchase additional licenses at the time of original purchase, or later if your needs grow.
Can I install APT Client on more computers than I have a license for?
Yes, but you can only have APT Client STARTED on the number of computers for which you have a license. For example, say you have 5 licenses but install APT Client on 8 computers. Only 5 of these computers could be running APT Cient at any one time.
